Most people who have struggled with substance use disorder have experienced stigma, that overwhelming feeling of shame that takes a devastating toll on a person’s self-esteem and serves as a barrier to people getting the care they need. Stigmatizing attitudes about substance misuse disorder are based on assumptions, preconceptions, and generalizations that lead to prejudice, mistreatment and rejection. Education that addresses these misconceptions and prejudice can be a powerful antidote to stigma.
